Norfolk economic development group receives funds

A Norfolk economic development group will receive $850,000 in federal funds to remodel an empty building to attract new business.

U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., said Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Commerce awarded the Greater Norfolk Economic Development Foundation Inc. $600,000 to purchase the former Vishay Electronics building in Norfolk. Gov. Dave Heineman said he has selected the foundation for a separate $250,000 Community Development Block Grant for the building.

The 14,781-square-foot building is to be remodeled on speculation. The economic development group hopes to use it for an existing business expansion, to lure a new company or as a business incubator.
