Press Release
By Mary Plettner, Nebraska Public Power District
I have been fortunate to serve for the past two years as the chairwoman of the Norfolk Area Action Council. As I have worked with the Action Council leaders, and as a certified economic developer for Nebraska Public Power District, I have gained some insights into the important factors that have contributed to the growth of the economy of Norfolk and the surrounding area.
The first thing that comes to mind is a long-term commitment of people working together. The Norfolk area continues to build on its diverse labor force and strong retail presence. Over the years, I have seen many positive developments in Norfolk and the surrounding area.
The Elkhorn Valley Economic Development Council has used a regional team approach when working on proposals and hosting prospects to the area.
The aspects of economic development that are imperative to any community’s success include long-term funding, sites with infrastructure, targeting industries with a marketing plan, and maintaining a business retention and expansion program. The people in Norfolk and the surrounding area have successfully addressed each of these requisites, and the results are clearly visible.
Madison County has experienced nearly 30 percent growth in the manufacturing sector and more than 35 percent growth in the professional and business services sector since 2001.
Focused teamwork and dedicated commitment from many organizations and individuals has produced these positive outcomes. It is the true partnership of economic development organizations, the state agencies, utilities, cities and local leaders that help the economy grow. I do not believe one is more important than the other, but when they all work together the results are phenomenal.
