Press Release
Nucor’s town hall meeting Tuesday night in Norfolk turned into a version of who’s who.
Among those attending were U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson and U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry.
Joining them were Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy and several state senators — Mike Flood of Norfolk, Doug Cunningham of Wausa, Matt Connealy of Decatur and Arnie Stuthman of Platte Center.
Add to those individuals Norfolk Mayor Gordon Adams and Republican gubernatorial hopeful Dave Nabity of Lincoln.
Nucor officials also paid special recognition to John Doherty and Don Holloway, who are now retired after serving as the longtime managers of the Nucor Steel mill and Vulcraft divisions, respectively.
And there were enough reporters and television cameras present to make one think it had to be a Nebraska football game.
But ask any Nucor official who the most important person was in attendance and they wouldn’t single out any individual. They’d point to the crowd as a whole.
About 2,500 people turned out for the Tuesday evening affair, shattering the previous attendance marks at seven previous Nucor town hall meetings in South Carolina, Indiana, Texas, Arkansas, Alabama and Illinois.
Dirk Petersen, manager of the Vulcraft and Cold Finish operations in Norfolk, said the large turnout represented a source of pride for Nucor and its more than 900 employees, or teammates as they’re called. It showed the strength of the relationship between Nucor and the Norfolk area and the support present for American manufacturing jobs.
